The pre-order period for the 2013 Annual Tree and Shrub Seedling Sale has ended, but we will be hosting our Surplus Sale during the pickup days, April 5 from 8am-5pm and April 6 from 9am-3pm.   Sitka Alder - Alnus Sinuata  
 


Description:
A tree native to Eastern Washington the Sitka Alder does best on moist sites. Nitrogen - fixing ability in the roots enables the plant to tolerate a variety of soil types. The Sitka Alder has serrated leaves and grows to 20-25'. It is excellent for erosion control and establishing a dense thicket for a screen, barrier or wildlife habitat.

  Paper Birch - Betula papyrifera  
 


Description:
A fast-growing tree, especially when young, that reaches approximately 50-70' when mature. The paper birch has leaves with pointed-tips and has bark that turns white and peels in long, papery strips. The paper birch prefers moist soils and is well-liked by songbirds.

  Quaking Aspen - Populus tremuloides  
 


Description:
The quaking aspen is fast-growing and reaches approximately 40' when mature. The bark on the limbs and trunk is smooth, with leaves that flutter with the slightest breeze. The leaves turn a showy gold in the fall. It is adaptable to most soils, as long as the soil has a high water content. It is a valuable browsing species for big game.

Description:
A popular evergreen, it is commonly used for Christmas trees and for reforestation. It can grow from 150-200' and has soft, medium green needles and prefers moist and well drained soils. It is somewhat drought tolerant and prefers partial shade but can tolerate full sun.

  Ponderosa Pine - Pinus ponderosa  
 


Description:
The most common conifer in Spokane County, it is also known as yellow or bull pine. It has a mature height of 120-140', and is fast growing with lush green needles and pineapple-shaped cones. It is drought tolerant and prefers well-drained soils and full sun. Due to its size, it should not be planted under utility lines.

  Western Larch - Larix occidentalis  
 


Description:
Also known as a tamarack, the western larch has a mature height of approximately 140-180', and is narrow and upright with light green needles and oval-shaped cones. Its bark has a slight vanilla scent when crushed. A good choice for reforestation, it performs best on deep, moist, and porous soils, and with partial shade.

Description:
A conifer with aromatic and glossy green needles and sweeping branches, the grand fir is often used as Christmas trees and as ornamentals in landscaping. It is usually found on deep soils and along stream banks. It provides cover for birds and big game.

Description:
With a mature height of 100-150' the western redcedar is a good choice for reforestation and riparian enhancements. It is fast growing and requires ample water; it is usually found on moist slopes and along stream banks. It is pyramidal in shape, and can be used as a hedge if planted close together. It is browsed by deer and elk.

Description:
A large shrub or small evergreen tree with a moderate growth rate, it reaches a mature height of 20-30'. Narrow and conical in shape, it is a good choice for windbreaks, screens and hedges.   Colorado Blue Spruce - Picea pungens  
 


Description:
A slow grower during the first three years and then the growth rate increases slightly. Reaching 70-100', it is often used as a windbreak. It has green to blue foliage, and its dense crown provides winter cover for small animals. It requires supplemental water in hot, dry weather.

  Gro-low Sumac - Rhus aromatic  
 


Description:
Also known as fragrant sumac, it is a deciduous shrub that only reaches approximately 1.5-2' in height but has a spread up to 8' wide. Its leaves are fragrant and turn from green to a show red or orange in the fall. Yellow flowers bloom in the spring and attract birds and butterflies. The Gro-low sumac is a low maintenance shrub that performs best with full sun to partial shade, and is a good choice for mass plantings and to help stabilize soil. It is drought-tolerant with low water needs, and it requires well-drained soil. The Gro-low Sumac is sold individually and is potted. Price $8.00 each with limited quantity.

Description:
A large deciduous tree with a medium growth rate, the leave of the black walnut turn from green to yellow in the fall and have a strong walnut encased in a semi-fleshy covering. It prefers moist, well-drained soils and does best in full sunlight.

Description:
A deciduous tree with stout, spreading branches that form a broad, round top. Its large leaves turn a dark red in the fall. It is often planted as a shade or street tree. Can grow to be 100'. An Ancient deciduous conifer that is very fast growing when young. It has a reddish fall color. It is known as the "Dinosaur Tree" because the species was around over 20 million years ago and considered extinct until a few trees were found in China in the 1940's.

Description:
One of the most adaptable firs it is commonly called white fir and can reach heights of 130-150'. In the average home landscape the tree will reach 30-50' tall and 15-25' wide when mature. The tree grows in an almost perfect pyramidal Christmas tree shape when young. The short, flat, soft needles are silvery blue-green both above and below.

Description:
A dense and full upright evergreen. It canreach 50' tall and a spread of 20'. It is a very adaptable conifer as it is both heatand cold tolerant. It grows in a wide variety of soils, providing they are not too wet. It will tolerate soils that are close to saturation for short periods of time, but is better suited to well-drained soils. It grows most vigorously in sites with good exposure to the sun.

Description:
Can grow to be 40'. It is among the most elegant of native conifers with dense branching, narrow conical form and glossy, dark green needles. It is very popular as a Christmas tree. Widespread regional use for ornamental landscaping. Seeds and buds are used extensively by red squirrels.

Description:
Native, evergreen trees growing to 60' tall with a sharp, spire-like crown. Spring planting is most successful. Subalpine fir establishes on open, severe or disturbed sites near timberline because of its ability to establish a root system under conditions too severe for its less hardy associates and its ability to reproduce by layering. Subalpine fir is relatively slow growing.

Description:
Serviceberry grows as a small deciduous tree or upright shrub, ranging from 6-15' tall. It often spreads by underground runners, creating large thickets. It tolerates soils that range from moist to dry and coarse to fine. It grows best in areas with over 12' of annual precipitation, good drainage, and moderate exposure. An excellent plant for enhancing wildlife habitat.

  Mockorange - Philadelphus lewisii  
 


Description:
A deciduous shrub, and tree sale staple, it reaches 10-12' tall, and is known for its very fragrant and showy white clustered flowers. It is a good choice to use as a border or screen, and to stabilize soil. It prefers sun to partial shade. While it can tolerate drought, the mockorange will produce more flowers if given supplemental water in hot, dry areas.

  Snowberry - Symphoricarpos Albus  
 


Description:
Snowberry is a deciduous shrub that can grow from 3-8' tall, with an approximately equal spread. They can spread by underground runners, creating thickets that can be quite large. It is an outstanding conservation species, is adaptable to a wide range of sites and its rhizomatous root system make it a good soil stabilizer, provides wildlife habitat, and is a common riparian species. The berries are poisonous.

  Ninebark - Physocarpus Capitatus  
 


Description:
Ninebarks are very hardy deciduous shrubs, and do best in full sun or very light shade. They flower nicely in the spring, have colorful foliage in the summer, have nice vibrant fall color, and the exfoliating bark is attractive in winter. It is medium sized shrub, 8-10' tall and about that wide. Ninebark adapts to most soils and is easy to grow and care for. Soils that are little acidic is preferred. When established, ninebarks are drought tolerant and long lived.

Description:
Golden Currant grows as a smallish shrub, reaching 6' tall and spreading 4'-6' wide. It generally grows best with good sun light. Established plants are covered with bright yellow flowers. It also has attractive yellowish-green foliage that turns bright yellow in the fall. It is a good soil stabilizer for both up slope sites and damp bottom land areas.

Another tree sale staple, caragana, also known as the Siberian peashrub, is a low maintenance and drought tolerant shrub that can grow to 10-15' tall. It has yellow flowers that bloom in the spring, followed by peapods in the summer. The caragana is a good choice for a windbreak and it works well on easily eroded soils.
