Garth Davis: 2008 Employee of the Year

The Spokane County Conservation District (SCCD) is pleased to announce its 2008 Employee of the Year, Garth Davis, who has been the Forestry Program Manager since November 2006. Garth was also honored at the state level as the Employee of the Year for the Washington Association of District Employees (WADE). He is pictured below (left) accepting his award at the annual WADE conference in June 2009.

In the three years he has been with SCCD, the Forestry program has branched out with 12 new projects and partnerships throughout Spokane County, and our participation has increased with all of our local jurisdictions, due to his leadership and initiative.

Garth has been instrumental in developing a strong working relationship between the SCCD and various agencies and groups, such as the City of Spokane, City of Spokane Valley, the Town of Rockford, and various homeowners’ associations including Valley View, Palisades Park and Hangman Hills.

Other projects that Garth has actively developed are:

  • convening a large group of partners to draft the County Wide Fire Protection Plan
  • partnering with the Department of Natural Resources to provide FireWise risk assessments and hazard fuels reduction in rural housing developments
  • partnering with Avista Utilities, who is providing $200,000 for the purchase and planting of trees in urban areas to provide energy conservation for homes
  • working with the City of Spokane to provide appropriate trees for planting in the rights-of-way and in city parks.

Garth received his undergraduate degree in Forest Practices from the University of Idaho. He joins an elite group of people in the country as he was recently awarded the title of Certified Forester through the Society of American Foresters.

In nominating Garth for the WACD award, Executive Director Rich Baden said, “Garth has one of those ‘can do’ attitudes that gets results…it is a comforting feeling knowing we have an employee as dedicated as Garth who can be trusted to uphold the highest standards and principles of the District.”
