R&G Malloy Family Holdings, LLC:
Leadership in Conservation Award
The Spokane County Conservation District (SCCD) was pleased to present the 2009 Leadership in Conservation Award to the R&G Malloy Family Holdings, LLC., in recognition of their dedication to conservation and wildlife preservation that began in 1967.
Between 1967 and 1971 Robert and Geraldine Malloy began purchasing property near Ross Creek, set in the foothills of Mount Spokane, between Blanchard, Idaho and Elk, Washington. They purchased 1,160 acres of prime timber land with the dream of one day passing it on to their children with the purpose of recreation and sustainable forestry management. A cabin was built in 1974 and has been the backdrop for numerous holiday and other special occasion gatherings over the years, where friends and family have enjoyed the serene setting and abundant wildlife the property has to offer.
Minor timber harvest operations began in 1980 with the harvest of cedar poles and the property was established as a tree farm in 1984. Since 1992 the Malloy’s have maintained annual harvest rates of approximately 10-12 million board feet; to date they have harvested over 180 million board feet of timber. They began to implement aggressive annual reforestation efforts in 1996 and since then over 15,000 trees (white pine, cedar and red fir) have been planted in the select cut areas.
Placed into the R&G Malloy Family Holdings, LLC., in 1997, the property was threatened a year later by a fire started by a lightning strike. The family pulled together with the Department of Natural Resources and because of their efforts the damage was limited to just 10 acres.
Between 2005 and 2008 the Malloy’s worked with the SCCD to remove three major fish passage barriers to resident and migratory trout under the voluntary Washington State Family Forest Fish Passage Program. This program provides cost-share assistance for small forest landowners to remove any in-stream structures that impede the free passage of fish; their participation was further proof of their strong desire to protect the natural wonder of the property.
Robert and Geraldine had their dream fully realized in 2006 when their 11 children took over the property as equal stakeholders. The property is currently under the management of three of the stakeholders, two of whom attend the SCCD Annual Meeting in May 2009, where they were presented with the Leadership in Conservation Award.
As property managers, Greg and Chris Malloy have accomplished the exemplary task of maintaining a sustainable timber resource that encompasses the highest caliber of stewardship and conservation.
