In an effort to increase the urban tree canopy within Spokane
County and to reduce the cost of cooling homes, SCD has partnered with Avista
Utilities on a project to strategically plant shade trees to help reduce
residential energy costs.
Studies show that large deciduous trees can shade the house
from the hot summer sun and decrease the cost of cooling a home. The program
offers free shade trees planted on the southwest or west side of your home. The
cost of the tree is underwritten by Avista Utilities while SCD provides the
labor and the ongoing maintenance of the tree is the responsibility of the
homeowner.
To be eligible for the Avista Shade Tree Program you must be
a homeowner in Spokane County, be an Avista Utilities customer, and have room
for a large tree on your property. The tree needs to be planted 15-30’ from the
southwest corner or the west side of the house. Initial site visits in the fall
or spring will determine if there is room for a tree and to pinpoint the exact
location - planting will take place soon thereafter.
The program is limited to 50 participants for each planting
season (spring & fall), so it’s best to apply early. To apply for the
program please complete the registration form and
either submit it electronically or print it and mail it to the District office.
You will be contacted by a SCD Forestry Department representative.
