The Green Zone is a place to discover numerous ways to "take conservation into your hands". The Green Zone is a public learning center demonstrating
positive options for business, home and play to create a more
sustainable environment.

The Green Zone History
The Green Zone made its debut at the 1996 Spokane Interstate
Fair. Visitors had the opportunity to walk through the interactive interdisciplinary
exhibit
created
by a coalition of private businesses, public agencies and individuals all
dedicated to the promotion of environmental sustainability.
In 1997, the
Board of Directors decided to create a permanent Green Zone exhibit in conjunction
with the Spokane County Conservation District and
WSU/Spokane
County Cooperative Extension. The Green Zone campus includes outdoor
demonstration sites and indoor displays. Information points throughout the
site interpret
demonstrations
of environmentally
sustainable practices. A Resource Center is housed in the WSU/Spokane
County Extension Education Center. Classroom space is available.
The Green Zone...
- demonstrates water conservation and aquifer protection
methods through stormwater management systems, xeriscaping
(drought tolerant
landscaping)
and permeable
paver installations;
- demonstrates methods of waste reduction:
composting, consumer choices and recycled-content building materials;
- offers
an environmental resource center containing books and exhibits.
At the Green Zone You Will Find Information on...
