Backyard Conservation

Your backyard has the potential to contain a wealth of natural resources no matter how many acres or square feet you own. There is a wealth of information available to help you turn your home into a sanctuary of conservation.

The Green Zone - The Green Zone is a resource for environmental sustainability in Spokane County. In addition to demonstration garden featuring native plants and a composting demonstration, they provide a variety of informational resources, including details on how to create a backyard wildlife sanctuary.

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife - The WDFW has developed the Backyard Wildlife Sanctuary Program to help landowners manage wildlife habitat around their homes. Their comprehensive website includes details on what makes a habitat, how to design a landscape for wildlife, design ideas and principals, a sample landscape plan, and links to even more resources. WDFW provides additional resources through its Habitat Program. Available information includes details on the Landowner Incentive Program and the Family Forest Fish Passage Program, both of which provide financial assistance to landowners for the preservation and enhancement of wildlife habitat. The department also maintains a Living with Wildlife site that provides information on how to attract wildlife and how to deal with wildlife conflicts.

Natural Resource Conservation Service - The NRCS provides numerous resources related to Backyard Conservation, including information on ponds and wetlands, selecting the right plants, and water conservation. The website also provides links to other resources.

Wildlife Habitat Council - The WHC works with other organizations, agencies, corporations and individuals to restore and enhance wildlife habitat. Their Backyard Conservation Program is a joint effort with NRCS and the National Association of Conservation Districts. Available resources include a 28-page booklet, free upon request, that provides how-to advice on backyard conservation. Call (888) LAND-CARE. The website also provides tips on how to get started with your conservation efforts.

Woodland Fish and Wildlife - WFW is a cooperative effort state and federal agencies and universities working to develop and provide information to private woodland owners on fish and wildlife habitat management. Several publications are available to download from their website.
